Execution of a Viet Cong Guerrilla [Vietnam, 1968]

Photographer Eddie Adams took this photograph of Nguyen Ngoc Loan, South Vietnam’s national police chief executing this Viet Cong captain. Adams later said that he regretted that the world did not see Loan as a hero for his actions in Vietnam.

 V-J Day [New York, 1945]

This is one of the most famous photographs from the Second World War. The soldier and the nurse are unknown but people have come forward to claim the fame. Apparently the nurse slapped the soldier immediately after. The event was the celebration of the end of the war and it was taken in Times Square by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

Looking Down Sacramento Street [San Francisco, 1906]

This photo was taken on April 18th, 1906. It is the most famous photograph of the devastation caused by the great fire and earthquake. It was taken by Arnold Genthe on a borrowed camera.

Hitler in Paris [Paris, 1940]

This photograph was taken of Adolf Hitler visiting Paris with his architect Albert Speer, on June 23, 1940. Hitler’s army had captured Paris and Hitler went to admire his new City.

The Body of Che Guevara [Bolivia, 1967]

After capturing and killing Guevara (Marxist revolutionary), the Bolivian army showed this photograph to prove that he was dead. His death dealt a death blow to the socialist revolutionary movement in Latin America and the Third World.

Phan Thị Kim Phúc [Vietnam, 1972]

The girl in the centre of this photograph is 9 year olf Kim Phúc. She is running from a napalm attack which caused serious burns on her back. The boy is her older brother. Both survived. This photo (by Huynh Cong Ut) became one of the most published of the Vietnam war.

Vatican II Begins [Vatican City, 1960]

This is a photograph of Pope John XXIII signing the document that officially started the Second Vatican Council. After his death, Pope Paul VI continued the council which was to change the Catholic Church so much that has become barely a reflection of what it was before. On his deathbed, John XXIII is rumoured to have said “Stop the council!”

 Tiananmen Square [China, 1989]

Probably the most famous image from the student uprising in China in 1989, this photograph shows a single person blocking the tanks that were emerging on the square. The man survived but shortly after the square was filled with innocent blood.

The Lynching of Young Blacks [Indiana, 1930]

This photograph was taken after the lynching of two young black men accused of raping a white girl. They were hanged by a mob of 10,000. The faces of the crowd are very telling. A third man was saved by the girls uncle who said he was innocent.

 The Last Jew in Vinnitsa [Ukraine, 1941]

This was found in the personal album of an Einsatzgruppen soldier. It was labelled on the back “The last Jew of Vinnitsa”. All 28,000 of the Jews living there were killed at the time.

Migrant Mother [Oklahoma, 1936]

This photograph of Florence Owens Thompson (32 year old mother of 7) is one of the great representations of the Great Depression. The photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange after Florence had sold her tent to provide food for her children.

Footprint on the Moon [Lunar, 1969]

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong put his left foot on the rocky Moon. It was the first human footprint on the Moon. They had taken TV cameras with them. The first footprints on the Moon will be there for a million years. This photograph was taken by Buzz Aldrin.

Taken by Nicéphore Niépce, this is the first photograph ever taken which still exists. He called his method heliography (sun writing) and this photograph took 8 hours of exposure time (hence sunlight on both sides of the building).

On January 28, 1986, after about 73 seconds into its launch, space shuttle Challenger exploded, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members, which included the first teacher in space.

The first transcontinental telegraph line went into operation 149 years ago on October 24, 1861, when the gap between the country’s eastern and western networks was closed. The year before, Congress passed the Pacific Telegraph Act, subsidizing its construction and Hiram Sibley, president of the Western Union Telegraph Company, organized crews to build west from Omaha and East from Carson City to Salt Lake City.

At a League of Nations conference in 1933, Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels remains seated while speaking to his interpreter. German-born Alfred Eisenstaedt, later one of the founding photographers of LIFE, recalled that Goebbels smiled at him until he learned that Eisenstaedt was Jewish — a moment Eisenstaedt captured in this photo. Suddenly, “he looked at me with hateful eyes and waited for me to wither,” the photographer recalled. “But I didn’t wither.” Not only didn’t he wither, he managed to take perhaps the most chilling portrait of pure evil to run in LIFE’s pages.

For the 15,000 spectators at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962 — including LIFE photographer Bill Ray — Marilyn’s breathy, intimate rendition of “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy amplified the buzz about an affair between the two. But beyond the titillation, the moment Ray captured in this, his most iconic shot, went on to play a major role in both Marilyn’s and JFK’s biographies, coming as it did near the end of their short lives. You don’t even need to see her face to know who she is: There she stands in the spotlight, unbelievably sexy, in a fleeting moment that would forever

Gen. Douglas MacArthur (center) kept his famous promise, personally storming the beach at Lingayen Gulf on his way to retaking the Philippines in early 1945. (Accompanying him were, from left, Gen. Tracking MacArthur’s progress was LIFE photographer Carl Mydans, who had been captured during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1941 and had spent two years as a prisoner of war. Mydan’s picture has become one of the most famous — and unabashedly triumphant — images of the war.

In 1955, the same year he’d die in a horrible collision on a California highway, James Dean walks through Times Square on a rainy day. Dennis Stock’s photo is illustrative of the actor’s persona — a true rebel don’t need no umbrella — but also quietly speaks to Dean’s professional roots (in New York, where he studied at the Actors Studio) and his legacy (see the long shadow stretched across the slick street).

J.R. Eyerman’s peek inside the opening-night screening of Bwana Devil, the first full-length color 3-D feature, certainly is peculiar: Men and women, young and old all angle in the same direction, formally dressed but for those silly specs over their eyes. Funny as it is, with the audience members coming off like clones of an alien species, there’s also prescience in the photo — not just about the emergence of special effects in cinema but also, on a deeper level, about the hypnotizing nature of our entertainment.

At the end of his shoot with artist Salvador Dali — a session that took six hours and 28 throws (of water, a chair, and three cats), “my assistants and I were wet, dirty and near complete exhaustion,” photographer Philippe Halsman reported. The resulting image, with a leaping Dali in midair amid the madness, is a portrait as kinetic and surreal as artist’s own work.

Then-U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy confers with his brother Robert F. Kennedy in a hotel suite during the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Looking at Hank Walker’s image today, through the filter of all we know now — that Jack would indeed win the nation’s highest office, with Bobby by his side as his most trusted adviser; that the brothers would navigate the United States through almost three years of magic and turbulence; that each man would be cut down by an assassin’s bullet by decade’s end — the poignancy is astonishing. And yet, even without the context of that history, the photo, with all its fascinating details and near-perfect composition, stands alone as powerfully

Backstage at the Academy Awards, two past Best Actress winners, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, await their turns to present. That Allan Grant could catch both supremely elegant, stylish icons together in a moment may have been a stroke of luck (Hepburn and Kelly never did work together, and very soon after this photo was taken the latter left Hollywood to become Monaco’s princess). But Grant’s use of composition and lighting — with the two women parallel and glowing in profile — is nothing short of masterful.

The bitter brutality of the Battle of Iwo Jima is brought home in W. Eugene Smith’s 1945 photo of Marines taking cover as explosives obliterate a Japanese bunker — one of the most violent pictures ever to make the cover of LIFE. Composed as if by a master painter (Hieronymus Bosch comes to mind), Smith’s picture perfectly encompasses the apocalyptic destruction inherent in modern warfare. It is also implausibly, unsettlingly beautiful.

For this 1949 portrait of Pablo Picasso in his studio in the south of France, the artist was inspired by Gjon Mili’s previous photos of ice skaters spinning through the air with small lights attached to their skates. Mili left the shutters of his cameras open as Picasso made ephemeral drawings in the air of a darkened room. This one was of one of a centaur. Mili caught the artist himself by using a 1/10,000th-second strobe light. This photo ranks among LIFE’s best partly because it actually captures the moment of creation by a genius.

A grizzled, weary American peers over his shoulder during the final days of fighting during the July, 1944 Battle of Saipan. The pivotal Allied victory there, 1,500 miles south of Tokyo, was earned at the cost of 3,000 American lives. This picture — easily among the most striking and immediately recognizable of LIFE’s countless war photos — was the 1940s equivalent of saying to the American public: We didn’t start this fight. But we’re going to finish it.

With increasing awareness of our surroundings, we have begun massively exploring how we can manipulate and adapt our surroundings to evolve around us, rather than slowly adapting to our environment. Nevertheless, many impressive breakthroughs of technology that propel changes towards medicine, machinery, agriculture and product design can often enough encourage detachment from our ecological roots. But where does inspiration come from? Believe it or now, a lot of solutions to population problems, mechanical errors and cures to diseases have all derived from nature.  So why do we strive for such detachment from our natural wonders, whilst at the same time, groom the crooks and holes of Nature for inspiration?

Below are just five small examples of how Nature has changed our lives. It has evoked amazing designs of transportation, movement, improved aids for disabilities and human welfare. Nature, no matter what form – will always inspire and spark ideas. After all, it has had millions more years to evolve, learn and adapt, so in a way we should feel confident  learning  from our historic ‘parents’.

1. Japan’s Bullet Train

This bizarre, yet fascinating 500-series Shinkansen bullet train operates in Japan – running between Tokyo and Hakata. Performing speeds of up to 300km/h, the Shinkansen is well known for its punctuality, comfort, efficiency and safety.  Inspiration for the design of these models actually derived from two animals. The first is from the plumage of an owl. The plumage of owls has evolved to reduce air resistance and noise, which has been used as an important factor during design of the train. The feathers of the owl are known as ‘saw-toothed wave feathers’ designed to generate small vortexes in the airflow that then further breaks up larger vortexes – thus reducing noise.

Secondly, the front sharp nose cone design of the train was inspired by the kingfisher’s aerodynamic beak. A common problem in high-speed trains is the loud noises produced when passing through tunnels. As a train exits a tunnel, compressed air suddenly expands creating a loud sonic boom -this noise can rattle for miles and would definitely be a form of noise pollution. To solve this problem train experts studied the kingfisher – watching its perfectly designed beak for fishing. Being able to dive straight down into water, with very little splash is an example of an evolutionary adaption of creating little differences in pressure when travelling at fast speeds – that, similarly caused by bullet trains.

Manufactures teamed up with scientists to replicate these aerodynamic features in the front of the train. So it is the kingfishers amazing ability to dive that has led to a transformation in design of many Japanese trains – resulting in reduced noise when leaving tunnels. “We are surrounded by genius” one Japanese design engineer proclaimed, and that is something we can’t argue with.

2. Mercedes Bionic Concept Car

Now here is a car certainly unique in appearance and persona. Its fascinating exterior design of this model has been inspired by the yellow boxfish – a very well evolved tropical fish that has adapted to life in coral reefs. Due to the low coefficient of drag due to its body shape, and the rigidity of its skeleton – inspired Mercedes-Benz to model the bionic after this fish, influencing the cars abnormal looks of a hexagonal shaped body. The car reaches up to 60km in a sharp eight seconds. It emits 80% lower nitrogen oxide, whilst consuming 20% less fuel.  Hallelujah Mercedes-Benz you have created one bizarre – yet impressive car.

3.  Aeroplanes Wings

The design and analysis of the wings of aircrafts is one of the principle applications of the science of aerodynamics – another inspired by the wings of birds. Birds are masters of flying – their flawless design of a lightweight skeleton, powerful chest muscles, fused bones and aerodynamic wings allows amazing movement on the wing, and it is no wonder that they become the key influence towards the development of aviation. The Wright brothers, regarded as the original inventors of the airplane, studied the vulture wing using it as a model when building the wings of their Kitty Hawk plane.

Over time, mankind has made substantial progress in the development of airplanes, with the bird’s wings shaping flight technology. The study of the bird flight has led to significant changes in the structure to the wings. One of the first planes to make use of these changes was the American F-111 fighter. Originally, the fighter didn’t consist of control surfaces such as ailerons and flaps, which are often used in aircrafts to control movement. Instead, just has birds so, the fighter could sweep its wings – allowing it remain balance during turning.

4.  Turbine Blades

Flippers are typically flat limbs that have evolved for efficient movement through water, and those of the humpback whale are a great example.  Despite being 40-50 feet long and weighing almost 80,000 pounds, the flippers easily propel the whale through water. The whales surprising dexterity is due primarily to its non-conventional flippers, which have large, irregular looking bumps known as tubercules across their leading edges.

Wind tunnel tests of model humpback flippers with and without leading-edge tubercules have observed what fluid dynamic improvements tubercules make. A suprising 32% reduction in drag and 40% and 8% improvement in lift are results of the whale’s tubercules. A company called Whalepower are incorporating these lessons from nature into their design of wind turbines – improving efficiency, safety and cost.

5.  Hearing Aids

A breakthrough in hearing aids has recently been announced on the development of a microphone that can pinpoint exactly where the source of sound is coming from. This, again is not a trick from the human imagination but in fact has been enthused from a parasitic fly called Ormia ochracea. An amazing evolutionary adaptation of a bridge of protein linking its eardrums provides this fly with exceptional hearing. This special bridge rocks up and down, amplifying the differences in the sound waves that arrive in each ear – allowing the fly to detect the slightest differences and receives a better directional signal. Maryland University have observed that this new fly microphone is eight times more effective at analysing the direction of the stimulus, then the current hearing aid.

It’s marvellous! One world – natural and raw, inspiring another that is more artificial and intellectual to adapt its products, designs and lifestyle from its tricks and flawless evolutionary adaptations. We must remember that learning and appreciating the natural world around us, is the key to evolution. Who knows what doors can open to future breakthroughs and developments by keeping our eyes peeled to the simplest and smallest things that live around us? We share this world together, and detaching ourselves from ecological roots may only hold us back.
